30 Days with Timex Road Trainer RT3

I previously blog about the winning of Timex Road Trainer RT3 GPS and today I like to share a review about the Timex Road Trainer RT3. My buddy Darrell also contributed to this article. Both of us love cycling, so I thought I shared the Timex Road Trainer with him. Each of us use 30 days and see if there is any dispute in our experience.

TL:DR – We believe that the RT3 is value for money and ideal as a first bike (entry level) training computer for everyone. The scale down features without Maps is good enough for local training.

Back Casing

Pros:

  • USB Port Easy to Locate
  • Located at the back – Water / Sweat doesn’t interact with it easily – Lesser prone to rusting and corrosion
  • “Snap-On” design of Mount easy to use and understand – easy to mount vertically and horizontally

Cons:

  • Rubber Protecting the USB port flimsy and prone to falling off easily after removing too many times.
  • Mini-USB not as popular as Micro-USB port – might be better with a micro-usb port

Battery and Backlighting

Pros:

  • Long Lasting Per Charge – More than 18 hours
  • Rechargeable via Mini-USB
  • Timex standard INDIGLO very appropriate for night riding
  • Able to set how long Light stays on – which is good

Cons:

  • Haven’t rode in the rain before so can’t decide on the waterproofing portion but it is IPX7 waterproofed, which means it can withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for up to 30 minutes
  • Concerns of corrosion to the metallic mini usb port

GPS using SiRFstarIII GPS Technology

THE GPS

for most of us, the concern is what’s the use of GPS when it’s not accurate! and what is this SiRFstarIII Technology?

Pros:

  • Refreshes very quickly (No lag in refreshing)
  • Automatic detection of Start/Stop very responsive ( Moment i start/stop pedaling, meter turns on/off automatically within a second ).

Cons:

  • Takes too long to fix GPS (~4 minutes)
  • Not really responsive if near buildings
  • Not really accurate – cycled with my speedometer and speed measured by GPS Feature shows 3kmph lesser than that measured of my speedometer
  • No real need of compass function for me here in Singapore
  • Needs to have a ANT+ Speedometer for more responsive and accurate readings

Features we love to have?

The Setting & Features

Pros:

  • Good Templates to choose from – 5 customizable screens and able to choose 1-6 components for every screen.
  • Good for different usages, e.g.
  • Long Distance Local Rides = Timer / Time / Speed / Average / Distance / Cadence
  • Trainer / HR Training = Timer / Time / HR Average / Max HR / HR % / Cadence
  • Notification that allows you to train according to HR Zone – Beeps when you hit upper limit / lower limit of training zone
  • Interval Setting good for Bike Interval Training on the Trainer

Cons:

  • Notification can be a little irritating sometimes (Speed too slow / Speed too high )

The HRM Sensor

The HRM Sensor

Pros:

  • The Flex Tech Digital 2.4 HRM Sensor is easy to latch on
  • No abrasion and laceration complaints
  • Reading consistent and accurate compared to other HRM devices
  • Material used comfortable and wont result in rashes
  • Does not Slip easily

Cons:

  • Yet to determine how long the elasticity will last since only worn 5 times.
  • Elasticity of HR Band crucial in determining purchase of equipment.

Phew… that was a long list. This is the first attempt to have a combine review and putting it all into point forms. We hope this can be helpful for cyclist who are looking to purchase a GPS trainer. And in summary, we think that Timex RT3 makes a suitable candiate for entry level GPS Trainer. –  there is also another review of this on DCrainmaker.com < do check it out.

**Love to hear your views about our style of reviewing, good/bad?

Unboxing Timex Road Trainer RT3 GPS

Yes, I’m the cyclist who won this :D

I like to first thank @yiheng for sharing the RT3 contest on facebook, otherwise I would not have known there was such a contest. Next, thank you Timex. I would certainly put the RT3 into good use.

I’m not a hardcore cycling gadget kind of person. I always been using cycling speedometer with basic functions, and it was good enough for me.

Before RT3 I was using Echowell U4W and I used it to track my average speed, max speed and distance travelled, thats about it. But I do have friends who are crazy about cycling gadgets, they purchase GPS cycling computer and power-sensors so that they can analyse their cycling performance and optimized their riding. They often share their analysis with me and I look forward to do the same with RT3 as I trained for my next triathlon race :D

So let me start unboxing Timex RT3

In short: The RT3 bike computer adds a dashboard to your handlebars.  Five screens of real-time cycling data provided by GPS, the included heart rate sensor, and optional ANT+ bike and power sensors let you track your performance and finely tune your rides. It is also part of Timex integrated GPS watch series.

Four key items. The bike computer itself (Duh!!!), the bike mount, heart rate monitor and the usb cable to transfer data over to your com. It requires to download a software from here No worries, I’m a mac user too, timex got us covered. You can adjust the setting on the bike computer or you can chose to adjust the setting of RT3 with the software. I would suggest going ahead with the software coz it is faster.

I apologized for my rusty handle bar :P . When you first switch it will start searching for it’s location. Takes about 3~5mins.

It pops up just like a car dashboard, you can see everything. I’m kind of not use to it, because there seem to be so much information.

How high and far have you climb that hill, finally I can go measure mount faber and NTU. Friends used to ask “hey bryan, how is IM Langkawi hill like, I would replied: about 4x mount faber” now I can give a number.

Burn fat burn fat burn fat… How much calories have to burn during the morning ride so you can know how many mugs of beer you can drink later in the evening

Seriously, this function I have no use for it. How can you get lost in Singapore?

Date & Time, why do you need to know this? because you cannot be on the bike all day :P

This complete my unboxing, I’m heading out for a ride. Here’s a video from Timex too.

**FYI: I collected my Timex RT3 from Royal Sporting House and they informed me that CRYSTAL TIME is no longer the agent for Timex. So if you own a Timex and it is still  under warranty, you have to look for Royal Sporting House now.

Kindle you light up my fire for you again!

It’s just been a few days since the release of the new range of kindles.  And online especially for the Kindle Fire, it has been swarm with reviews and first impression. I had a kindle 3 once, in fact just 2 months ago but the screen froze and I had to send it back to Amazon.

Under the Amazon warrant, I was able to get back the full refund and Amazon also return me the shipping fee for shipping it back to US. (Thumbs up for Amazon) even thou I am quite disappointment with the QUALITY of Kindle 3.

Since I sent back the Kindle 3, I am left without an eReader and was serious considering an ipad. But just days before, Kindle Fire came to light.

Certainly Kindle you light up my fire for you again! priced at US$199 about 60% cheaper than ipad. Why Not? Plus it has all the functions that I need and even better considering I paid US$114 for Kindle 3 with special offer. It is just US$85.00 more and I get the following:

  • read magazines in color and picture which is a much better experience than kindle 3
  • reading pdf will certainly be much a better experience  (expect that I may not be able to read as long compared to eInk.
  • I can watch videos on the go!
  • Checking email as well

Apart from the above, I can still get the functions below which I MAY NOT or CANNOT use! :) because these services may be just available to the US market.

  • 18 million movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, and books
  • Amazon Appstore – thousands of popular apps and games
  • Ultra-fast web browsing – Amazon Silk
  • Free cloud storage for all your Amazon content
  • Vibrant color touchscreen with extra-wide viewing angle
  • Fast, powerful dual-core processorAmazon Prime members enjoy unlimited, instant streaming of over 10,000 popular movies and TV shows

The question in mind is suppose Amazon sends me a kindle Fire that does not work well again, can they send me a new one? instead of just a refund? Because in the case of my Kindle 3, it was a ad supported version and for the ad supported version it is only available for the US market which I order through a 3rd party logistic unlike Kindle 3 without ads, it can be shipped straight to the international customers thus if anything happen to kindle 3 without ads, Amazon will send you a new one.

hmmmmmmmm. Should I??? 2 cents thoughts.

Kindle Screen frozen and you are in Singapore, How?

Untitled, originally uploaded by Gniskcut.

26 July 2011, you (kindle 3) arrived into my world. I was anxiously waiting for your arrival since I place my order.

I chose you (kindle 3) over nook, over sony and other ebook readers because of the positive review online. I chose the Kindle with ads because the ads only appeared on the home screen and during the screensaver mode so it certainly does not affect my time with you.

When you arrived, I load you up with various ebooks I have on hand. I enjoyed my time with you. With you around, I put physical books away,

You were light,
You were easy to handle,
You were not a strain to my eyes unlike Ipad,
You have good selection of books from your host (Amazon)

* The only bad thing was kindle allow massive storage of ebooks so sometimes I may lose focus so end up reading a bit of here and there but still I was glued to you.

I felt my S$160 spent on you including shipping from borderlink certainly worth everything, I was proud to show (kindle 3) to everyone, spread the love for ebooks.

My #kindle froze and it never came back!

But 2 days ago, You (Kindle 3) just went off! You stay at your screensaver and not responding to any instructions that I gave you. It’s barley a month and this is how you repay me for the positive words I put up for you. Amazon Kindle 3 “You let me down!”

When you went frost, I was lost. I googled about you begin frozen.
And I was surprised by the problem that you had before and till now it’s still not solved.

You gave me the following instructions to perform the hard reset but it did not work.

I talk to your customer service officer – he was very kind. He offered to make a 1 to 1 change but the kindle will not be shipped to Singapore straight. Instead it will only be shipped to the US address. :(

Well looks like I have to incurred extra cost to bring you back to myside, but what if it happens again? Because there are customers who had 2 to 3 times of change with you (Kindle 3).

So for people living in SIngapore, do take this common issue of frozen kindle page into consideration while buying an ebook.

I am torn apart between Macbook Air and Macbook Pro!

Today marks the 1st month of my usage with my Macbook Air. I just want to say “I love it” both in terms of performance (i5) and looks. If you are torn apart between choosing the new Macbook Air 2011 or the Macbook Pro, I would like to share my experience with you.

I had a Macbook with me since the start of my university life. Just 3 months ago my Macbook gave up on me. The battery was not working and the wireless was gone. But I do not have any complain because the handy Macbook have already been at my side for a long time – 6 years.

So I decided to get a new one. I walk into Apple Store with a MacBook Pro in mind. As a previous of Apple products there is no second thought about its quality and ease of use. I walked straight towards the Macbook Pro 13 inch, thinking this is the one I am going to go for – looks, performance, quality you got it all.

But it was this point of time; I also catch a glimpse of the new Macbook Air 2011.

The first thing that truly steals my heart was it weight, and its sleekness. Than came the struggle, How about the performance? Questions like the following pops up in my mind.

Do I need a CD rom?

The last time I used a CD or DVD was about 2 years ago, where I had to burn a DVD video to my friend. But with cloud storage nowadays, I believe I can skipped the CD Rom

Solid Stated Disk is only 128GB, would that be enough?

My 6 years MacBook had only 60GB

Can I use MacBook Air for coding or wed development? (planning to learn)

I read thru this – http://mondaybynoon.com/2011/07/12/macbook-air-web-development/

Can I use MacBook Air for trading? Ie: using Parallel Desktop to run windows and run programs like MT4 for forex trading

Did not find anything online when I was doing research at the Apple Store. But I took a risk. (Now – It runs perfectly with Parallel 6 upgraded from Lion)

Will MacBook Air overheat when it multitask?

Did not find anything as well when I took the plunge. (Now – When running Parallel, the MacBook Air does heats up a bit)

Do I have to bring it around often?

Yeah. Frequently for presentation

After going through the above questions, I did a last research on its benchmark performance. FYI I did all the research on the demo Mac at the Apple Store. ( I was determine to get a MAC that day.)

From Macworld

From Barefeats

After reading all these, spending 3 hours in Apple Store. I am a proud owner of Macbook Air 2011 :)

Save your butt with ISM Adamo racing saddle

This year end I will be heading down to western Australia for an Ironman race. I have heard from many who came back from the race taking about flat road and strong head wind, so this time round I decided to put on aero bars on my trusty Java (name of my road bike).

Having Aerobar on a road bike mean changes to your riding position and that maybe not be efficient because roadies are meant for roadies position rather than Tri. I also thought of changing to a Tri bike as well but that’s another story all together.

20110711-075810.jpg

From the picture above, you could easy see the significant patented design of Adamo seats. The cut open area at the front of seat protects your “brotherhood” especially for prolong riding.

I ha a good experience with the Adamo racing model. The front part of the seat is quite broad, it rubs a bit on the tights but this i just a a matter of getting use too.

I had a hard time while choosing between Adamo racing or Adamo road.
Since most of the time in Singapore, I do group ride would a Adamo road be better. If you read the spec on Adamo road it is more recommended for upright siting posture. Another different is it is slightly boarder at the front of the seat and not to mention it ha more cushion.

Based on online research I took a bet on Adamo race. And it is not a wrong choice. On a road riding position on Adamo race – No Problem. It feels just as comfortable. Moreover if I had chosen Adamo road, maybe it would create more friction on the tights as the front of the seat is boarder.

Having be using Adamo racing for 2 weeks now. Feeling is good. “brotherhood” is comfortable. I got my saddle from eBay. You can easily find 2nd ones there too but I got a new one from sell bike smiths. After the exchange rate it cost about sgd192. I waited almost 2 weeks. For those in a rush you can try bike boutique Singapore as well.

10km run at MacRitchie Reservoir with Vivo Barefoot Ultra

Blogging

The weight of ultra on feet is extremely light, its feels like I am running without a shoe. And because of the thin layer of sole, it also makes my steps on rocky stones along the macritchie trail “sensational”. As compared to Vivobarefoot EVO, EVO provides a little bit of more comfort because of it cushion sole. On the other hand, this “sensational” feeling makes me pay more attention and adapt better  to the ground condition.

With functional plug-in tongue and laces, I decided to remove the plug in tongue for this run because I was afraid that the rough edges on the tongue would create friction with my feet. However, there were some abrasion still. The shoe laces is good, a light pull and you are tight and comfy to go > maybe I could try my next triathlon with the Ultra

Blogging

Close up on my feet shows the "cut" skin on my last toe.

One of my running mate points out a concern, “if you wear this shoe without a socks, and this shoe is made of plastic like material, wouldn’t there be more heat generated while running making your feet to sweat more?

My answer to this is no. Surprisingly I do not feel much sweat on my feet and because of the holes that provide much airing, my shes do not smell as bad :P

Running with Ultra at MacRitchie trail, I do not feel so worry because of the puncture resistant sole, it makes me focus more on my running style and tempo.

I will be doing more runs with Ultra and will give more updates :)

*Vivo Barefoot Ultra is not out yet in the market, thanks to Barefoot Store I have the opportunity to try. I would like to mention that there is a sock provided when you purchased the Ultra. It is mainly use for winter purposes. You can find more information from the video below

Here is video introduction on Ultra

My new BOB Tote from timbuk2 have arrived!!!

Finally, after BOB have traveled half way around the world he has finally arrived. I am so happy that I would like to share my happiness with everyone :)

He started out from US, then to Korea, follow by HK and across the sea to ShenZhen before landing at Singapore at 11.20AM – 22 Oct 2010.

Let's welcome Bob from US

I just want to say I love timbuk2 bags. I owned a Timbuk2 messenger bag, a data dump and now its BOB tote.

Why is it called BOB. Because

No matter which way you spell it, Bob is two bags in one. Outside (or in), he’s mellow and matte. Inside (or out), he’s sexy and slick. Constructed of durable, waterproof Tarpaulin fabric, Bob is ready for drippy produce and weekend wardrobes. Carry him as a tote, cart him as a shoulder bag, or sling him as a Messenger. > quote from timbuk2 site
