Port Dickson Triathlon 2012 Post Thoughts

all on podium. everyone is a winner!

2 years ago, I did my first Port Dickson Triathlon 2010. I did it in a total of 02:46:24. Although it was below my target of 3 hours. I know deep in my heart that I could have done better. Because I pushed during the ride and at the run, I was unable to sustain and had to walked for quite a distance.

This year, I am really happy with my run. I did not walk through out the run route. I keep telling myself that this is my race and this is my pace. Because sometimes when you see others running past you, you get demoralized or your ego kicks in and you go on chasing. This breaks momentum.

A typical OD Tri is 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run.

And my result this year, 02:34:44.

I am very happy with the result. Btw, this is also the year where I started off the race alone, because my friends belong to a different age group :P I may not be on the podium but I like to thank many people for making triathlon so much fun. I have a bunch of crazy friends who race together with me. I have Mommy Tiger who plans swim circuit and bike training for us And Coach Sham from TRF who trains me on my running form.

finally if you have not try Port Dickson Triathlon before you should!.:D

a brief into to Port Dickson Triathlon aka PD TriPD tri is organise by Uncle Chan, he is the forefather of organising triathlon events in Malaysia. Attending race briefing by Uncle Chan is like attending a talk show, full of fun and laughter. “Seasoned triathletes, you know what I mean :) ” Unlike a typically Olympic Distance Triathlon The race is also less “strict” meaning it is common to see long chain of bike drafting at the course. Plus you might find yourself clocking your best time in PD tri because the race route is kinda of “shorten”. This year, as tracked by my friend’s garmin the run route is actually 9km instead of the typically 10km :)

These are my CRAZY friends…

Today, my friends and I are leaving for a Ironman Race in Western Australia. It seems just like yesterday when I completed my first Ironman in Langkawi. Also I remember that I blog about how impulsive I was to sign up for a second ironman.

This race is very different from my first Ironman. The first Ironman I did it alone because some of my friends thought I was crazy. Much of the training that I did was alone and that was pretty boring. This time round, I have a group of crazy friends doing the race together. With my friends, training was much more fun.

These are my friends!

Waking up early in the morning, spending our weekend cycling our lungs away. Attending swim session right after work. Suddenly we became Triathlete! - You all make the suffering less! Haha:D  These are my friends, each of them race for a reason. And I wish them all the best.

Thank you Darrell

Thank you Mr. Yeo

Thank you Ah Ow

Thank you LMY

Thank you friends from Team Bundung for the Swim/Bike/Run

Most importantly, thank you Kat for organizing the training and always having support stations for us.

So the usual SOP for me before going to a race is to set my goal. My goal is:

Swim: I am looking at 1:35hrs although I am in wetsuit but I am not very comfortable with it.

Bike: During Langkawi, I did 7hrs so for IMWA I am looking at a <7hrs. A 6.30hrs ride

Run: less than 5hrs. 4:30hrs would be great!

Let’s do it, friends!

My Ironman Experience

Training Log: Tempo run

Each round – 850m

Ran 10 round – each round averaging about 4.30mins

I was feeling great starting from round 1 to 5, but from round 6 onwards steps start to get a bit smaller but breathing was still good, I also feel that my running posture is getting better. Since like running slower and paying attention to my running style is a better form of training compared to training just focusing on speed.

Round 8, trainer wants us to open up our legs.  Starting it was a bit difficult but as I lean my body forward it seem that the legs start to follow. I was felling good and breathing was good. Round 9, I opened my legs wider but I can start to feel stress on my knees, I pushed on. Round 10, breathing was getting heavier and mental starting to get weak. So I speed up and completed my last round.

In fact I want and need to use to the feeling of opening up my legs and maintain the body posture – I feel that the best set is round 8, if I can do 10 rounds based on round 8. I think I can do better.

Now I look forward for my next training, 30km. The very last training before TNF 100 on 09 Oct 2010.

F1 Sports EQ Run 15km – A painful experience with VivoBarefoot’s Evo

This is not a post to criticize  VivoBarefoot’s Evo. This post act as a training log to me, Why did I not train enough before I go for this 15km Trail race at MacRitchie Reservoir.

The experience was good today with VivoBarefoot, during the trail there were puddles of water around when I happen to step onto one, both feet were wet. But to my surprise it happens to dry up very fast as well. Again like I said before the grip was good on sandy ground but on rocky surfaces it posed a challenge to me. I was doing well up to the 10km till this happen.

This time, I was not wearing socks again, :P I thought I could do better without socks plus it does not look great with socks (I think) so along the race, the back part of the shoes was rubbing hard against the back of my feet. Starting out it was alright, I could still focus on running but at the 10km mark it became worst, it even turn swollen and I find it hard to focus on running then. In fact the pain was disrupting my run.

Next as I mention the were puddles of water, although the shoe dry up quickly there were still moist plus I was not wearing a soc, a blister quickly form at the bottom of my big toe. So while going down slope I sometimes have to reduce speed to avoid crushing into other people/runner, I had to life my toe so to applied a bit of pressure to reduce the speed. This constant motion together with the moist soon created a big headache for me. Each step I placed on the group seems like “hell” to me.

So what I did was to reduce my strike length, running at small steps reducing the impact on my blister and on the cuts. It was a painful experience !

But the lesson I learn today is not just about wearing a socks, but in fact after these hings happen I start to appreciate the ground, I start to appreciate how I should land each foot strike. And not to forget I was not totally prepare for this race with this shoe, I had to experience pain at the lower calves too.

But I also feel as compare to the previous run – I started the race stronger, thus I believe in time to come with sufficient I would run proficiently on near “Barefoot” shoes.  When I was back from the race I search on the internet on how to transit into barefoot running. ” I should have follow the transition and not jump straight into taking races and force myself to adapt.

This link provides insight on how you could transit in a Vibram Five Fingers, very interesting article and I like the article on understanding which part of our feet are week as a result of cushioning shoes or any other matter.

Nonetheless, I competed the 15km trail race at 1:20:05, Well I disappointed because I was aiming at 1:15:00 but I am happy because I learn to understand more about my feet and running structure.

I have decided that I would restart everything and would learn and train to transit into barefoot running.

oh not to forget the goodies after the run. A water bag :) which I plan to use the North Face 100 :P

Feel Good Training

Had a good training today, woke up at 6.15am realized I was late for the 6am meeting at C4.”shit”
So I replan my training program today.

So I went on to mount faber to do a few laps of hill training, then its on to my long ride training. I was doing good today, constantly been eating and drinking to make sure I am not dehydrated. Plus I did control my speed today not to exceed 33km/h so that I am able to conserve for the later stage.

As for run, surprising it was the heat that kill me and not the run. well I still believe it was a good training day. at least I manage to clear an hour of run. When I was running I was thinking of planning a strategy for my run. I was thinking if I am able to do a 9min/km run at the race.

My target for the ironman race is
Swim 1hr 45min
Bike 27~28km/h
Run – 9min/km

This should be my running pace

2009 Standchart Marathon

Well, I did a 5:25:04 today. Not a very good result, as I was expecting a 4:30:00. it was a total 1 hour way from the target. I do not know if it is me or is it my age. I do not seem to be as “fit” in the past.

For this race I been thinking? is it that I never train enough or I have problems with my health. Obvious at around 30km, I start to get dehydrated easily plus I was also thinking about my urine because if I push too hard there will be blood in my urine. Well this certainly makes me remember about the last race. Sundown where I only ran up to 25km.

5:25:04 is a good gauge of where is my standard. i should focus more on running now then.(i think) I think I do not have a big problem reaching 25km but 30km I think its the wall.

Thinking about all this I am also worried about my ironman race in langkawi in coming Feb 2010. Can I cross the line that’s the question in my mind. Friends who clear the IMWA09 had a tough race. They have proper training and good equipment but there was near situation of DQ.

My plan now is to look for training programs and my diet. I want and I pray to have God to see my round the route to Langkawi Ironman.

I had an interview with MPL, a recruitment consultancy firm. To my surprise, I never expect that a recruitment firm could be so exciting, there are so many opportunities in the industry but the most rewarding part is to manage the expectation of both clients and job seekers.

18/12/06 – left home at 8am reach Pasir Ris interchange around 9.15am , Meeting the ODAC group at 9.30am. Therefore took a cab down to changi Village ferry terminal but … We students behaving like true ‘Singaporeans’ , There are still people who are late. *Damn wasted my cab fare:(

Signed up for the cycling trip alone, hoping to know people from other faculty. Was quite surprised when I saw Fiona and Xiu Qing(*ops), they are from the NUS Bialthon. Was glad to see them now that I do not have to be a loner, because other people came in group.

About 1030am , Bum Boat here we come. This the Bum Boat that we travel on. A high chance of having this number on the 4D this saturday. $$$$$$$$$$

Start of the trip, weather looks “Good”

Long haul Road ahead , 20 Km to Lunch where we are planning to have great Seafood
Another 30km from Lunch Point to Camp Site(Desaru Beach)

Seafood Restaurant we chose to have our lunch, We had

  • Cereal Prawn

anyway what I want to review is that we had been ‘chopped’ , because what we are having we can get half price at another seafood restaurant further down. What we are paying is for the branding … if you notice in the picture it has been branded by SIngapore ” You xuan mei shi wang”

So we ae paying for the Brand….:( But food was wide out FAST !!!

We did not carried on our journey, because the rain was pouring heavily, the Comms had to used the truck send the bike to the camp site and send the rest of the people there too. In order to save the trip because each trip to and floe is around 30mins …
Some of us stay behind .. trying to squeess in more bicycles into the classic 1 tonne.. And ‘yes’ 28 bikes into the 1 Tonne…
