Angel’s Gate Preparation

As you all know I’m currently running a startupIntraix with my buddy Darrell. The good news is Intraix has been selected to be one of the startup to pitch at Angel’s Gate Season One. But the bad news is I did not have any post up on “running startups” because we were busy preparing for our pitch. Nonetheless “running startups” will soon return after our Angel’s Gate pitch and the startup I interview will make you go “HUNGRY!”

So if you are wondering what is Angel’s Gate. It is a Reality TV series where entrepreneurs have the opportunity of a lifetime to pitch their dream business ideas to some of Asia’s most successful investors.

Think Shark Tank or Dragon’s Den. Angel’s Gate is sort of similar but Asia style.

so what’s the process like?

And about the part on “Getting Support” through social graph. I like to represent Intraix and run our very first marketing attempt here at Intraix.

Here are the details!

wordpress.com still blocked in China!

Just came back from a 2 weeks’ trip to China, the startup culture is certainly growing fast in China especially Beijing. I was not able to blog my experience over there because wordpress.com was still blocked. It was blocked in 2008 when I was there for NOC and it still is.

“Self-hosted wordpress blog did not face any blocking issues, when I was there”

Alternatively, there are still ways to blog through wordpress.com. One, you can get a VPN – this way you can access facebook and twitter as well but it will cost you, unless you are in China for a long period of time otherwise try looking for free VPN tunnel. Two, you can simply make use of wordpress.com – Post by Email service like I did for this post.

I would also like to share with you guys some internet services that I faced problems/blocked while I was there.

  • Gmail – It was laggy and I had to keep reloading.
  • Flickr – it’s doing fine
  • Youtube – chose “优酷
  • Evernote – is good too even there is a clone for it (麦库记事)
  • Dropbox – is syncing well too BUT if someone sends you a download link it will be blocked. And Yes! there is a clone for it too. (酷盘
  • Facebook & Twitter – as everybody knows, it is blocked. and there are always clones available (人人) & (微博
  • Skype – is horrible!, it was great in the past…:(

So as people says, when in “China” do what the chinese do! I got myself a QQ account. The IM service from QQ is great, video chat is also much smoother than Skype (Singapore-China), transfer of files are very fast as well. And to keep track of the latest tech stuffs in town, I got myself a weibo. Following Tech2ipo & web20share as a start. :) Here is a site that will be useful if you want to see if that any particular site is block in China. (http://greatfirewallofchina.org/)

John Paul DeJoria – A classic American success entrepreneur

What to do on a relaxing Sunday?

You could slack on a couch and watch TV programmes or

You could get a good book from the library and learn something new.

These are typically what I do on a relaxing Sunday, but what if there are no good TV programmes and I was too lazy to read. Well when all things fail, seek help from YouTube.

Here is a great video I found online that I would like to share with everyone. I always enjoy rags-to-riches story and I am sure you will as well. Especially when you can learn at the same time.

The video goes about an hour but I believe you will learn much from it and be motivated by the speaker - John Paul DeJoria

Some bio about the founder - John Paul DeJoria has arguably achieved every entrepreneur’s dream, parlaying a $700 startup, Paul Mitchell Systems, into a $900 million-a-year hair care heavyweight.

Two key highlights in the video

  1. Be prepared for rejections
  2. Always produce quality products

The Axis of Awesome – Truly amazing song mix based on 4 chords

Boring Sunday night, after watching the Stars Award. I went online.

So using stumble upon thru youtube I actually found this video , and I think it is truly amazing.

<The Axis of Awesome 4 Chords>

A Live version

And that reminds me of the similar video which I truly like too :) .
